From our Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week, our Senior College students commenced their mid-year examinations. For many students, these assessments are an important milestone, providing valuable feedback on their progress in TASC courses and helping them prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
As I walked through examination rooms this week, I found myself reflecting on a very different group of students, the prospective Year 7 students and families we have been interviewing for 2027.
One of the questions I am frequently asked by prospective families is, "What makes Marist Regional College different?" My response is often quite simple: we have high expectations of our students, and we provide outstanding support to help them achieve success.
The students sitting examinations this week are a reflection of that philosophy in action. Their success is not simply the result of what they have done this year. It is the culmination of years of learning, support, encouragement, guidance, and the development of habits that began long before they entered Senior College.
At Marist Regional College, our expectations extend beyond academic achievement. As a Catholic college, we seek to develop young people who live out the values of Hospitality, Respect, Justice, Compassion, and Responsibility. We encourage students to follow the example of Jesus through service, leadership, prayer, and meaningful relationships with others.
We are also a college of learners. We expect students to strive for personal excellence and to make the most of every opportunity available to them. This does not mean every student must achieve the highest grades. Rather, it means we expect every student to give their best, embrace challenges, and continually seek improvement.
Importantly, these expectations are matched with strong support. Through our pastoral care group structures, dedicated teachers, learning support programs, and wellbeing teams, we work hard to ensure every student is known, valued, challenged, and supported. We recognise that students achieve their best when they feel connected, safe, and supported within their school community.
This partnership between high expectations and outstanding care is also reflected in our expectations around attendance, behaviour, uniform, and learning. These expectations are not rules for the sake of rules; they create the conditions that allow every student to learn and thrive. At Marist Regional College, we believe all teachers have the right to teach, all students have the right to learn, and everyone has the right to feel safe.
The examinations taking place this week also remind us of another important truth: success in Senior College does not begin in Year 11. It begins in Year 7.
The study habits, organisation, resilience, and self-discipline required for senior studies are developed gradually over many years. Students who consistently review their learning, complete their work, seek assistance when needed, and take pride in doing their best build foundations that serve them well throughout their schooling.
This is why we place such importance on developing strong learning habits from the moment students arrive at Marist. By the time students reach Senior College, these habits should already be firmly established.
As we continue to welcome prospective families to our College, the message remains the same. Marist Regional College is a place where students are challenged to be their best, supported to achieve their goals, and encouraged to grow as learners and as people. The students completing examinations this week are evidence of what can be achieved when high expectations are matched with outstanding support and care.
As a College, we will continue to provide the support, guidance, and opportunities our students need to succeed. In return, we ask students to embrace the high expectations we set for them. Together, this partnership of high expectations and outstanding support enables every student to achieve personal excellence and become the very best version of themselves.
Finally, none of this is achieved by the College alone. The success of our students is strongest when you, our families, and the College work together in genuine partnership. Parents play a vital role in supporting our expectations around learning, attendance, behaviour, uniform, and wellbeing, while also encouraging the habits of organisation, resilience, and perseverance that underpin success. When students receive consistent messages and support from both home and school, they are far more likely to thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. We are grateful for the trust you, our families, place in us and for the ongoing partnership we share. By working together, we provide our young people with the greatest opportunity to achieve personal excellence, realise their potential, and become the very best version of themselves.
Warm regards,
Shayne Kidd
